Introspection

Introspection isolates the figure from descriptive context. Against black, light and colour become spatial forces, concentrating attention on posture, gesture, fabric and expression. The darkness is not a background but an active field in which the figure can withdraw, resist or become sharply visible.

The series grew from an encounter in Ethiopia, where a resting woman in a dim interior revealed how little is needed for a human image to become concentrated and self-contained. Across five portraits, colour shifts while the setting disappears, leaving a tension between exposure and inwardness.
